brrly babbles about chemistry bc she cant focus (density, volume, and mass)

OK IM READING THIS ARTICLE ON HOW TO CALCULATE VOLUME/MASS USING DENSITY and let me tell u i am extremely interested in chemistry but i cant seem to focus and i swear this article is really good so im using this blog post to actually focus on the thing at hand so i can also teach you guys so when teaching you guys ill actually focus on the topic

ok anyways vocab time!

density - how much matter is contained within a volume

mass - the quantity of matter of which a body contains

volume - the amount of space a substance or object occupies

now that you're a smartie and know all your vocab words we can continue on!! also this is technically my notes not really since im writing notes down but i should start taking notes on laptop butt hats not as effective BUT it is easier and it'll help me get work faster IDK CONTINUING ON

not continuing on actually! my notes consist of things that help my brain understand stuff better for example i have to know why a formula works for something so yeah so if u actually learn anything from my random babbling then im very glad and i would like u to talk to me about it so i can know

also i think u can calculate density using volume and mass too yeah probably because obviously but then i haven't learned about that yet but then the formula for finding density is

d=m/v

or

density=mass/volume

ok now im following an article because im trying to learn this myself so the question issss "What is the density of a cube of sugar weighing 11.2 grams measuring 2 cm on a side?"

the first step is to find the mass and volume of the sugar cube! the mass is how much matter is in a body (not an actual body just like an object or whatever ykwim), meaning the weight and other things like that!! so the weight of the sugar cube is 11.2 so we have the mass

mass - 11.2 grams

and now we need to find the volume!! to find the volume of a cube u have to multiply the sides of the cubes to the power of three (that's how u say it right?? multiply the sides to the power of three that's how u say it right??) so it would look like this

volume of cube = length of side^3

and then we plug in the length of the side which is 2 cm so we haveeee

volume of cube = 2^3 which equals 8 cm!! so the volume of the cube is 8 cm^3 and no i don't know why the ^3 is still there its just what the article says

now step 2 is to plug in our variables into the density formula so now we have

d = 11.2g / 8cm^3

and since you guys are good at math u should know what to do to solve for d actually wait no this is slightly different now let me explain

so density is expressed as g/cm^3 and ^3 means cubic whatever so that's why the ^3 is still there its not because its to the power of three idk i think

so to solve this equation you would actually have to divide 11.2g by 8 which would give youuu

density = 1.4g/cm^3 !!!!

WOOHOO YOU JUST LEANRED HOW TO CALCULATE DENSITY AND I DID TOO THAT ACTUALYL HELPED ME UNDERSTAND MORE!! THIS TEXTBOOK I HAVE DOWNLOADED IS  A BIT CONFUSING BUT THIS ARTICLE HELPED ME A LOT but without this textbook i wouldn't know what i need to learn to actually learn chemistry SO THANK YOU TEXTBOOK I STILL LOVE U EVEN THOUGH UR SORTA CONFUSING!!! OK MOVING ON

lets calculate the density of a liquid now because i haven't done that yet and i should learn how

we're going to be dealing with a solution which is salt water and since salt water is salt mixed with water we're going to have to deal with two masses soooo woohoo i guess

the question is "A solution of water and salt contains 25 grams of salt in 250 mL of water. What is the density of the salt water? (Use density of water = 1g/mL)

OHH SO g/mL IS USED FOR DENSITY OF LIQUIDS AND WATER OK OK I GET IT OK NOW LETS MOVE ON

since we're dealing with the mass of the salt and the mass of the water we're going to need both fo the masses before we calculate the density

ok wait im lowkey confused

mass of salt - 25 grams

no mass of water?? only volume of water (250 mL) and the density is 1 g

OK I GET IT so we have to calculate the mass of the water before we calculate the mass of the salt + water all together

since we have the volume AND the density we can calculate the mass! to be honest with you im just going to copy and paste whatever the fuck this means below because i dont know what it means

densitywater = masswater/volumewater

solve for masswater,

masswater = densitywater·volumewater
masswater = 1 g/mL · 250 mL
masswater = 250 grams

OK I GET IT so you need some background information first and this background information is about how to find mass with density and volume

so since the formula to find density is d=m/v, the formula to find mass is m=d times v and this is a little side note for me but the reason why this formula works is because when solving for density you have to divide mass by volume so when you dont have mass you have 60=m/3mL

and to solve this you have to multiply both sides by 3mL which if u just put d=m/v into a different format to find m then it would just be m=d times v so yeah you get it right kimberyl! ok good now moving on

so if the water thing at the bottom of each word in the formula above confuses u, its just there to show u we're not just calculating any type of mass/density/volume, we're calculating mass/volume/desnity for water it doesnt really matter if its there or not its just yeah

so lets find the volume and density of the water first before we find the mass

Also this is the first step ( finding the mass and volume of the object / substance )

density = 1 gram (in the question it said "Use density of water = 1g/mL")

volume = 250 mL (remember, mL = volume in the density calculation thing)

now we plug it in!!

m = 250mL x 1 gram / mL (since theyre different units of measure we have to cancel out the mL to get mass ACTUALLY IDK DONT LISTEN TO ME WORD FOR WORD that's just how it works in my mind )

You know how like you learned how to turn mL jnto like other units of measure in math?? Well yeah that's gonna be very helpful for this lesson because thsts what we're doing here i mean technically not but its sorta the same

We're turning mL into grams and that's also because grams are a unit of mass and mL isn't I think but I'll research on that later if Google understands what im asking

Anyways after we plug it in we multiply and we get a mass of 250 grams!!

Afterwards we add the mass of the water with the mass of the salt

Salt mass (25 grams) + water mass (250 grams) = 275 grams of mass total!!

So now we have the volume and mass of the salt water!!

Volume - 250 mL (we don't need the volume for the salt because when we add salt into water it doesnt add any volume to the water )

Mass of salt and water combined (total) - 275 grams

Now we plug it in!! Which is step two btw

D = 275g/250 mL

That would equal to 1.1g/mL!!!

Also if u were wondering why the /mL is still at the end that's because that's how you write density and also because technically it's the same thing at 275g idk whatever ignore this paragraph ig

now sometimes you wont be blessed with the volume and mass being in the correct measurements u need for density

and i mean like it wont be g/cm^3 or g/mL because that's how density is written and no i don't remember what g stands for if it comes up later in this blog post ill tell u

and no i dont know why density is g/cm^3 or g/mL either so let me research it rq

OHH SO g/cm^3 means gram per cubic unit and g/mL means gram per milliliter so those are units of density

so gram = mass and cubic unit = volume!! that makes it much more easy to understand SO THATS WHY THE SLASH IS THERE since d = m/v and g/mL and blah blah blah you get it right

ok moving on so sometimes u arent blessed with mass and volume being in the 'right' format' and you know what I'll talk abt this tomorrow

I'm literally typing this on my phone because my parents won't let me stay up to write some stupid blog about chemistry SO whatever I'll do a part two i promise

Also I forgot to do a part 2 of that binary code thing with the alphabet letters so I'll do it when I have time I swear I promise

Ok goodbye if you learned anything great im glad I could teach you if you're interested in learning chemistry that's also great if you're potentially interested in studying chemistry that's amazing but if you're looking for a study partner then thats FANTASTIC I STUDY SO MUCH BETTER WITH ANOTHER PERSON AND I USUALLY DONT TALK TO MYSELF LIKE OUT LOUD SO IF I TALK WITH ANOTHER PERSON WHILE TRYING TO BRAINSTORM IDEAS ON WHY A FORMULA WORKS OR SOMETHING I USUALLY GET THE ANSERR QUICKER BECAUSE HEARING MYSELF TALK ABOUT MY IDEAS HELPS ME OR WHATEVER ALSO when I'm brainstorming ideas it sounds like Im asking the other person the questions but I'm NOT! im actually finding the answer myself so if u would potentially maybe pretty pelsse study with me then don't answer my questions because im most likely brainstorming unless it's an actual question then please do answer ok goodbye thanks for reading!!!
